Seattle March 30 1933

United Airlines began operating today what can only be described as the world's first truly modern airliner.
Boeing's model 247 is a remarkable aircraft which flew for the first time on February 8. The 247 is way ahead of all comtemporary designs. It is the first all-metal streamlined monoplane transport. This single aisle, low-wing, stressed skin airplane has fully retractable gear. It introduces control surface trim tabs, automatic pilot and wing and tail de-icing.
Powered by Pratt and Whitney Wasp 550-hp radials,

the 247 is the first twin-engine airplane able to climb on one engine with a full load of 10 passengers and 3 crew. It is also the first multi-engined transport to use supercharged engines of the type formerly confined to military airplanes. Its top cruising speed of 155 mph and range of 485 miles make it possible to fly across the USA in less than 20 hours. The 247 introduces cabin air conditioning and a soundproof fuselage. Its passengers have individual reading lights and a toilet is provided.
